TOWAMENCIN, PA — A former teacher in Montgomery County was sentenced to jail this week after he sent sexual messages to some female students, authorities said.
Stephen Andrew Catania, 28 of Souderton, who taught at North Montco Technical Career Center, will spend the next 11.5 to 23 months behind bars, according to court documents, as first reported by the Times Herald.
Catania also faces five years of probation upon release.
The incidents date back to the summer of 2018, authorities said. Catania, a substitute teacher at the school, offered an underage female student $100 for sexual photographs, according to police.
Months later, in Jan. 2019, Catania contacted the student again and asked her to delete the messages and his number from her phone, accoridng to police.
In January, Catania also sent Snapchat messages to a different underage female student, authorities said.
Police said the messages began as a conversation about programs in the school, but soon became sexual in nature, including a request for a photo of the girl in her underwear.
The student then told Catania that what he was doing was illegal, and he asked her not to tell anyone, police said.
Catania was ultimately taken into custody in April 2019.
