Delco Roundup: Haverford’s Quartermain, Strath Haven capture Central League titles

Haverford High’s Riley Quartermain captured the inaugural Central League tournament girls championship, shooting even par 72 Monday at Downingtown Country Club.

The boys championship was won by Harriton’s John Bradbeer with a score of 72.

Strath Haven claimed the team championship with a score 310. Leading the Panthers to victory were Tyler Debusschere (76), Jackson Debusschere (77), Grace Smith (78), Colin Buecler (79) and Jackson Voshell (84). Smith was third in the girls bracket.

Volleyball

Ridley’s seniors delivered on their special day.

Makenzie Griffith notched 10 aces, seven digs and six kills in a 3-0 victory (25-8, 25-9, 25-19) over Marple Newtown on senior night.

Other seniors filling up the score sheet were Abi Herrin (nine kills, four blocks), Anna Borcky (seven kills), Casey Tinney (16 assists, four aces) and Megan O’Donovan (two digs, one ace).

Penncrest 3, Radnor 2 >> The Lions celebrated senior night with a thrilling five-set win (25-19, 25-22, 25-18, 27-25, 15-12).

Sophomore Liz Kurcon had a huge match with 21 assists, 12 kills, 10 aces and seven digs. The Penncrest seniors produced as well. Leah Hall supplied 23 assists and two aces, Ashley Rodgers notched nine kills and eight digs, Madison Marinelli added 17 digs and two aces, Liz Mackfee picked up 12 digs, and Liv Carney chipped in with eight kills, four blocks and three aces.

Mary Kate Colleran registered 14 kills and Josie Darrach finished with 10 kills and 20 assists for Radnor. Lucy Criscuolo pitched in with seven kills and four aces.

Garnet Valley 3, Conestoga 0 >> Maddie Wood dished 30 assists and Julia St. German had eight kills to help the Jaguars (3-1) cruise 25-19, 25-18, 25-14. Maryparl Tienabeso added six kills and one block, Annie Bechtold three kills and three blocks, and Caitlyn Hagerty seven kills and three aces.

Haverford 3, Strath Haven 2 >> The Fords rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take the final two sets from the Panthers, 25-19 and 15-12.

Haven was led by Olivia Dumont (24 kills, 17 digs, nine assists), Gabby Zewier (26 assists, 10 digs), Emily McGinn (11 kills, four blocks), Molly Prendergast (19 digs), Megan Prendergast (31 digs, four aces, four assists), Emily Crowther (21 digs) and Rose Henry (five kills, two blocks).

Lower Merion 3, Springfield 1 >> Jordan Galloway recorded seven blocks and six kills for the Cougars, who fell to the Aces by scores of 25-21, 27-29, 15-25 and 15-35.

In the Catholic Academies League:

Villa Maria 3, Sacred Heart 2 >> The host Lions lost a heartbreaker in five sets 25-19, 18-25, 26-24, 20-25, 13-15. Erin Corcoran dominated with 11 digs, 13 kills and four aces in defeat. Aly Albanese excelled on defense with 13 digs to go with one ace.

Field Hockey

The freshman duo of Karley Stephen and Violet King powered Radnor to a 7-2 win over Penncrest. Stephen and King combined for the seven goals.

Elsewhere in the Central League:

Harriton 11, Upper Darby 0 >> Kiki Egberts powered the Rams with two goals and two assists. Avery Wollak scored twice and Sydney Odiorne added a goal and an assist.

Maggie Smith was busy in goal for the Royals, making 35 saves.

Conestoga 3, Garnet Valley 1 >> Tina Rawa scored in the second half for the Jags, who trailed 3-0 at halftime. Megan Finnegan stopped seven shots in net. Caroline Wisch tallied a goal and an assist for the Pioneers.

In nonleague action:

Arch. Carroll 3, Dock Mennonite 1 >> Meg Sheridan, Julia Kingsbury, and Carleigh Connors netted one goal apiece for the Patriots. Kingsbury had two assists and Sheridan had one helper. Courtney Keith made five saves in the cage.

Girls Soccer

The third time was the charm for Strath Haven against Conestoga.

The Panthers defeated the rival Pioneers, 1-0.

All-Delco Maggie Forbes delivered the lone goal of the evening off an assist from Ellie Malek.
